What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy means “treatment using scents”. Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years spanning back as far as the Persian, Mayan, Greek and Egyptian cultures. The first recorded use of plants in Britain was in the 13th century and from then on, manufacture increased and the oils became widely used as perfumes, antiseptics and medicines.
Essential oils are extracts from plants, trees and flowers that contain the substances that give them their smell. In nature, they are released slowly, but when heated or crushed, their oil glands burst, releasing the plant’s aroma more strongly. Many of these essential oils have beneficial chemical properties such as; anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-septic effects and prove very therapeutic when applied to the body.
Essential oils are known to be the “essence” of the plant and there are many ways in which Aromatherapy can be used including: inhalation, use of oils in the bath, compresses (hot/cold) and probably the most well known use in carrier oils for massage.
The oils work directly on the chemistry of the body, via the skin and bloodstream and on the nervous system affecting the emotions and psyche. Oils are blended specific to the client’s individual needs, restoring balance within the body, eliminating toxins and promoting the body’s natural healing process.
What happens during the session?
Your first appointment begins with a consultation to enable a full assessment of your needs. This will be carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You should allow an extra 10-15 minutes for the consultation. The consultation session is a vital part of the process as it helps to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.
The practitioner will ask some questions about your general health, lifestyle, any current or recent illnesses, medication and family history. The practitioner will also ask you what you are hoping to achieve from your treatment in order to tailor a treatment plan specific to your individual needs.
Oils will be blended before treatment and the session will be performed on a treatment couch with towels to cover any areas not being treated. It is suggested that you wear loose comfortable clothing in order for the oils to remain on your skin as long as possible and carry on working even after the treatment.
What happens after the session?
Suitable after-care advice and any further sessions necessary will be discussed to develop a future treatment plan. You may experience contra-actions after the session, which are the body’s normal reaction to massage, especially when extremely stressed or new to treatment.
Contra-actions may include tiredness, muscular aches or frequency in urination. These will also be discussed with you after the session. Any possible contra-actions you may experience are absolutely normal and will subside within 12 hours of treatment. They can serve as a positive sign to indicate that the treatment has worked and the body is detoxing.
