What is Indian Head Massage?
Indian head massage is an ancient art based upon Ayurvedic techniques which have been practised for more than 4000 years, and although it was introduced to the West only recently, it has become one of the most popular holistic therapies.
This style of head massage is a tradition which has been passed down through generations and is used in the home and in barber shops across India using aromatic oils and spices. Children over the age of six are taught the massage and share with all generations of their family.
Widely taught around the world, it has developed and evolved to include techniques for the upper back, shoulders, and neck, all areas that are very susceptible to stress and tension.
The Massage is said to promote balance between physical and emotional well being, and it helps you to feel peaceful and relaxed. It also helps to reduce tension in your neck and shoulders – especially beneficial for people who are seated for long periods driving or at computers etc.
What happens during the session?
Your first appointment begins with a consultation to enable a full assessment of your needs. This will be carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You should allow an extra 10-15 minutes for the consultation. The consultation session is a vital part of the process as it helps to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.
The practitioner will ask some questions about your general health, lifestyle, any current or recent injuries, areas of pain and family history. The practitioner will also ask you what you are hoping to achieve from your treatment in order to tailor a treatment plan specific to your individual needs.
You will be asked to remove any glasses, earrings, necklaces and ties. Hair should be loose and not highly styled or have hair ornaments in as these will need to be removed.
Massage can be carried out in a comfortable chair over light clothing (preferably a t-shirt or collarless top) and without the use of oils or on a treatment couch lying down using oils. The treatment begins with massage of the upper back and shoulders, then onto the upper arms, the neck and the head, finishing with some gentle chakra balancing. The transition between different areas is very smooth and fluid and links together wonderfully.
The massage of the head can be quite vigorous with stimulating frictions and pressures to the scalp. Other areas of the massage are smooth and gentle. However, please remember that the massage can be adjusted to your specific needs, likes and dislikes.
What happens after the session?
Suitable after-care advice and any further sessions necessary will be discussed to develop a future treatment plan. You may experience contra-actions after the session, which are the body’s normal reaction to massage, especially when extremely stressed or new to treatment. Contra-actions may include tiredness, muscular aches or frequency in urination. These will also be discussed with you after the session.
Any possible contra-actions you may experience are absolutely normal and will subside within 12 hours of treatment. They can serve as a positive sign to indicate that the treatment has worked and the body is detoxing.
