What is MLD?
Manual lymphatic drainage was created by Danish doctors Emil Vodder and Estrid Vodder in the early 1930s for the relief of chronic conditions such as sinusitis and other immune disorders.
While working on the French Riviera treating patients with chronic colds, the Vodders noticed these patients had swollen lymph nodes. In the 1930s, the lymphatic system was poorly understood. The Vodders were not deterred by this and, in 1932, began to study the lymph system, developing light, rhythmic hand movements to promote lymph movement. In 1936, they introduced this technique in Paris, France, and after World War II, they returned to Copenhagen to teach other practitioners to use this therapy.
Since Vodder’s pioneering work, MLD has spread world wide and has become a popular treatment in many European hospitals and clinics. It is now gained acceptance worldwide as a component in the treatment and control of lymphoedema.
What happens during the session?
Your first appointment begins with a consultation to enable a full assessment of your needs. This will be carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You should allow an extra 10-15 minutes for the consultation. The consultation session is a vital part of the process as it helps to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.
The practitioner will ask some questions about your general health, lifestyle, any current or recent injuries, areas of pain and family history. The practitioner will also ask you what you are hoping to achieve from your treatment in order to tailor a treatment plan specific to your individual needs. The therapist will explain the specific areas of your body that will be worked on during the session and demonstrate the very light pressure applied.
Treatment is carried out on a treatment couch. You will be asked to remove some of your clothing and lie down on the treatment bed where you will be covered in towels to keep you warm. No oils or powders are used and it is completely safe even for those with sensitive skin.
What happens after the session?
Suitable after-care advice and any further sessions necessary will be discussed to develop a future treatment plan. You may experience contra-actions after the session, which are the body’s normal reaction to massage, especially when extremely stressed or new to treatment.
Contra-actions may include tiredness, muscular aches or increased thirst. As the re-energised lymphatic system starts to recycle excess fluid and waste you may find you have a greater frequency in urination to expel these waste materials. After an MLD treatment, you will generally feel more relaxed, clear headed and energised.
Any possible contra-actions you may experience are absolutely normal and will subside within 12 hours of treatment. They can serve as a positive sign to indicate that the treatment has worked and the body is detoxing.
