What is Pregnancy Massage Therapy?
The history of Massage Therapy can be traced back over 5,000 years varying in many different types and applications. Chinese, Persian, and Egyptian cultures have all recorded the use of Massage Therapy for a variety of purposes including the improvement of circulation and joint movement. Touch is one of the most instinctive responses to pain.
There are many different types of massage that have been developed however all types of massage can have an effect on the skin, muscles, blood vessels, lymph, nerves and some of the internal organs.
Swedish massage, also known as “therapeutic massage” is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812.
The term “Swedish Massage” refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying firm but gentle pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and moving in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.
What happens during the session?
Your first appointment begins with a consultation to enable a full assessment of your needs. This will be carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You should allow an extra 10-15 minutes for the consultation. The consultation session is a vital part of the process as it helps to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.
The practitioner will ask some questions about your general health, lifestyle, any current or recent injuries, areas of pain and family history. The practitioner will also ask you what you are hoping to achieve from your treatment in order to tailor a treatment plan specific to your individual needs.
Oils will be used and the session will be performed on a treatment couch, using specialist cushions to support you & bump completely, reducing pressure on your back. Towels are used to cover any areas not being treated for your added comfort and to preserve modesty.
What happens after the session?
Suitable after-care advice and any further sessions necessary will be discussed to develop a future treatment plan. You may experience contra-actions after the session, which are the body’s normal reaction to massage, especially when extremely stressed or new to treatment. Contra-actions may include tiredness, muscular aches or frequency in urination. These will also be discussed with you after the session.
Any possible contra-actions you may experience are absolutely normal and will subside within 12 hours of treatment. They can serve as a positive sign to indicate that the treatment has worked and the body is detoxing.
