What are Reiki & Seichem? (Pronounced Ray-Key & Say-Keem)
The word “Rei” means universal and “Ki” means the vital force that flows through all living things. So Reiki can be defined as the universal life force. Eastern medicine believes this energy flows through all living things and is vital to our well-being. The Chinese have studied this life force for many thousands of years and place great importance on what they call ‘Chi’. In fact Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the idea of bringing about the balance of chi within the person and only then will health follow. When energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us and we experience a sense of well being.
Mikao Usui was the originator of what we call Reiki today. He was born in Kyoto and studied Qi Gong, martial arts, medicine, psychology and theology of religions around the world. He travelled widely, taking a great interest in both spiritual and physical healing. In 1922 he went up Mount Kurama to fast and meditate for 21 days. This was where he was given the inspiration for his system of healing, which he called Usui Reiki Ryoho.
Mikao Usui opened his first school/clinic in Tokyo in April of the same year. The Usui teachings included teaching people how to heal themselves, still a key point in today’s Reiki teaching. All current Reiki systems and healers trace their lineage back to Mikao Usui.
Seichem works in the same way as Reiki, with hands placed on the body, but in addition hands may be positioned in the aura which surrounds the body. It is reputedly one of the healing arts practised in ancient Egypt. Reiki is one of the four elemental rays which make up Seichem – earth (Reiki), water, air and fire.
Seichem was rediscovered in 1980 by Patrick Zeigler while he was visiting Egypt and after spending the night in the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid.
Seichem connects with our higher selves to establish healing in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. The energy is used to heal and stimulate personal development and growth. Spellings of the word differ but it always means power in a spiritual sense.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not.
Reiki is gaining popularity worldwide within hospitals. The UK National Health Service uses Reiki as part of its Complementary Alternative Medicine program (CAM) therapies as part of day care patient programs.
What happens during a session?
Your first appointment begins with a consultation to enable a full assessment of your needs. This will be carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You should allow an extra 10-15 minutes for the consultation. The consultation session is a vital part of the process as it helps to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.
The practitioner will ask some questions about your general health, lifestyle, any current or recent injuries, areas of pain and family history. The practitioner will also ask you what you are hoping to achieve from your treatment in order to tailor a treatment plan specific to your individual needs.
The treatment can be carried out on a treatment couch lying down or sitting in a chair and you will remain fully clothed. The Reiki treatment is given by the practitioner placing their hands on various places on your body, generally working from head to toes. Reiki has a way of naturally flowing to the area where it is most needed and therefore every treatment will be different.
What happens after the session?
Suitable after-care advice and any further sessions necessary will be discussed to develop a future treatment plan. You may experience contra-actions after the session, which are the body’s normal reaction to massage, especially when extremely stressed or new to treatment. Contra-actions may include tiredness, vivid and colourful dreams or heightened emotions. These will also be discussed with you after the session.
Any possible contra-actions you may experience are absolutely normal and will subside within 12 hours of treatment. They can serve as a positive sign to indicate that the treatment has worked and the body is detoxing.
