What is Sports and Remedial Massage?
Sports and Remedial Massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.
It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.
Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. It can be given before, during and after sporting events, as well as a general maintenance massage to promote peak fitness.
It is effective for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the muscular-skeletal system. Regular massage can help athletes to prevent injuries, especially from overuse.
When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Sports and Remedial Massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.
If necessary, audio sonic therapy or paraffin wax may be applied to targeted areas. Often, rather than receiving a full body treatment, massage and manipulation will be focused on one area, stretching and working the muscle fibres or scar tissue.
What happens during the session?
Your first appointment begins with a consultation to enable a full assessment of your needs. This will be carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You should allow an extra 10-15 minutes for the consultation. The consultation session is a vital part of the process as it helps to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.
The practitioner will ask some questions about your general health, lifestyle, any current or recent injuries, areas of pain and family history. The practitioner will also ask you what you are hoping to achieve from your treatment in order to tailor a treatment plan specific to your individual needs.
Treatment may focus on specific areas such as the legs or back and oils may be used as well as audio-sonic or paraffin wax. For treatment of the legs it is recommended you wear shorts for your comfort and discretion as stretches may be applied in order to increase mobility of joints. Treatment will be performed on a treatment couch with towels to cover any areas not being treated.
The practitioner will treat problem areas in different ways, including soft tissue release, neuromuscular release, deep tissue work, trigger point therapy active passive stretching exercises. Trigger points are tiny contractions of muscle fibres in a very small band of muscle tissue. They can feel like a knot or a small lump ranging in size, lying along a taut band of muscle fibres. Trigger points can be painful when treated, but the pain goes within 15 – 20 seconds is helpful in promoting relief from referred pain.
What happens after the session?
Suitable after-care advice and any further sessions necessary will be discussed to develop a future treatment plan. You may experience contra-actions after the session, which are the body’s normal reaction to massage, especially when extremely stressed or new to treatment. Contra-actions may include tiredness, muscular aches or frequency in urination. These will also be discussed with you after the session.
Any possible contra-actions you may experience are absolutely normal and will subside within 12 hours of treatment. They can serve as a positive sign to indicate that the treatment has worked and the body is detoxing.
